Advancing skin transplant preservation techniques

In a recent study by Giulia Montagner et al., a novel method to preserve human skin for transplantation was developed by decellularising the human dermis; a process where cellular components are removed to minimise the risk of transplant rejection. This allowed skin to be stored through freeze-drying while maintaining its structural integrity and essential components. To validate its effectiveness, Byonoy’s Absorbance 96 microplate reader was used to analyse and quantify the collagen content of the preserved skin.

Collagen, a critical protein in the extracellular matrix, is a primary determinant of the skin's mechanical strength and elasticity. Therefore, accurately assessing collagen content is vital to confirm that decellularisation preserves the essential properties of the skin.

Quick and precise optical density readings

The Absorbance 96 enabled researchers to quantitatively measure collagen levels. As a versatile laboratory tool, the plate reader is designed to measure absorbance at various wavelengths across 96 samples simultaneously. Its ability to rapidly deliver precise optical density readings allows for efficient and accurate quantification of biomolecules such as collagen across multiple samples.

In the study, it confirmed that decellularisation did not significantly alter the skin's extracellular matrix. The findings indicated that the collagen content remained largely intact, validating the technique's ability to preserve the skin's essential structure.

An indispensable tool for large-scale studies

The Absorbance 96's precision and high throughput make it ideal for studies requiring detailed biochemical analysis, such as tissue engineering and biomaterial preservation. With a broad wavelength range, the instrument can accommodate diverse assays, including the collagen analysis performed in this study. It offers significant savings in time thanks to its capacity to analyse multiple samples in parallel, making it an indispensable tool for large-scale studies and experiments involving high sample volumes.
