Cost-effective alternative solutions to HPGe detectors for gamma spectrometry

18 April 2023

The Scan-RAM MCA combined radio-TLC scanner and Multichannel Analyser is just one of LabLogic's solutions to costly and complex HPGe detectors for radionuclidic identity.

LabLogic has developed smaller, affordable detectors for the Quality Control of PET and SPECT radiotracers

Gamma spectrometry is used in the Quality Control of radiopharmaceuticals with gamma-emitting radionuclides, such as technetium-99m, iodine-131, or indium-111. Besides measuring radioactivity, gamma spectrometry also identifies any impurities or contaminants present in a sample.

High-Purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors are recognised as the most accurate for the determination of gamma spectra because of the high resolution achievable. However, they are expensive, lack GxP-compliant software, and require liquid nitrogen cooling to operate, presenting hazards to the user and contributing to ongoing running costs.

LabLogic has developed smaller, lighter, affordable detection solutions for gamma spectrometry that use Nal(TI) detectors, which deliver excellent responses, even for low-energy gamma-emitting radionuclides. These solutions offset the disadvantages of larger, costly HPGe detectors while still delivering the necessary resolution for the Quality Control measurements of PET and SPECT radiotracers.

Scan-RAM MCA dual-use instrument

LabLogic’s Scan-RAM MCA is a combined radio-TLC scanner and Multichannel Analyser that can perform radio-TLC analysis or radionuclidic identity and radiochemical purity tests in a single run. Although the Scan-RAM MCA does not have the same energy resolution as a HPGe detector, it is still sensitive enough for identifying radionuclides and associated impurities at a much lower cost.

  • Uses a NaI(TI) crystal for high sensitivity and good spectral resolution, allowing for accurate energy determinations.
  • Available with a range of interchangeable detectors for different radionuclides and different levels of radioactivity.
  • Reduced footprint by combining two instruments into one, delivering flexibility in the lab.
  • Optimised for ambient temperature measurements, eliminating the associated hazards and costs of liquid nitrogen.
  • Controlled by LabLogic’s Laura for PET™ software, which is compliant with GLP/GMP, MHRA, and FDA 21 CFR part 212 / 11 regulatory requirements, allowing configurable audit trails, controlled access, electronic signatures, and secure data storage.

Spec-RAM™ gamma spectrometer

LabLogic’s Spec-RAM™ gamma spectrometer has been developed specifically to determine the radionuclidic identity and purity of PET and SPECT radiotracer samples. It is an adaptable solution for radiopharmacies that can accommodate a range of detector sizes, geometries, and adaptors, as well as Eppendorf adaptors.

The Spec-RAM’s Nal(TI) detector is composed of a high-quality assembly with integrated PMTs. This encapsulates the crystals in an air-tight housing to prevent degradation owing to their hygroscopic nature. This ensures the longevity and stability of the detector assembly.

  • Options for 2x2” (51x51 mm) and 3x3” (76x76 mm) planar and well-geometry crystals, which are all interchangeable with the same MCA module to optimise the Spec-RAM for specific applications.
  • Additional 3x3” (76x76 mm) option with a larger well size to permit measurements of 50 ml Falcon centrifuge tubes.
  • Excellent signal-to-noise ratio with a copper liner and lead shield reducing background radiation.
