Supporting the professional development of future radiochemists

LabLogic has been working with the Cyclotron and Radiochemistry Laboratory (CARL) at King’s College London to support the next generation of radiochemists. With both hosting HPLC workshops to support continuing professional development, this partnership is providing learning opportunities for trainees to bridge the gap between academic study and practical laboratory application.

“LabLogic’s commitment as an industry partner is invaluable.”

CARL’s Facility Strategic Manager Dr Julia Blower said, “One of LabLogic’s greatest strengths is its willingness to support and train the next generation of radiochemists. This is something I’m personally very keen to help facilitate, and it was brilliantly demonstrated during the recent PET Chemistry Practical Workshop we hosted at King’s. LabLogic’s commitment as an industry partner is invaluable.”

Addressing limitations in current practice

With a focus on method development and equipment maintenance, the workshop was supported by LabLogic’s Chief Service Engineer Phil Wright. Julia said, “Within a GMP environment, strict adherence to SOPs is essential for ensuring quality and compliance. However, this necessary focus on step-by-step processes can sometimes limit opportunities for trainees to develop a deeper understanding of the underlying techniques, making troubleshooting more challenging when issues arise."

“Building broader knowledge of HPLC, such as phase interactions or the role of key components, helps support stronger problem-solving and critical thinking. In GMP settings, delivering this type of training can be difficult due to the need to protect clinical output. However, the CARL facility, as a preclinical environment, provides the flexibility to explore these concepts in more depth.”

“Using a single software platform to control all equipment across different research areas is exactly how a facility should operate.”

CARL uses LabLogic’s Laura Radiopharma software for radiochromatography data collection and analysis. Compatible with over 300 instruments from leading manufacturers, Laura provides a single point of control for all hardware.

Julia said, “What made the workshop feasible was Laura; by using a single software platform across multiple HPLCs, we were able to run tests across different systems with ease. If one HPLC is in use, users can simply move to another and transfer methods seamlessly, as everything is controlled by the same platform. This flexibility makes it easier for researchers to work efficiently and keep experiments moving.”

“Using a single software platform to control all equipment across different research areas is exactly how a facility should operate. It has really helped us streamline our procedures and work more efficiently.”
