Introducing Alpha+: Fast, vacuum-free alpha spectrometry for Ac-225
13/10/2026
The Scan-RAM 2's new detector delivers fast, simple alpha spectrometry via radio-TLC, eliminating the need for an in-vacuum system
Until now, alpha spectrometry detectors have required complicated laboratory methods dependent upon large, stationary hardware and vacuum chambers. However, LabLogic’s new Alpha+ detector for the Scan-RAM 2 can count alphas as well as produce alpha spectra. It can do this either while scanning a TLC strip or when positioned over a planchet disc.
While conventional scintillation-based or gas-ionisation detectors can provide gross alpha counts, they do not offer the energy discrimination needed to distinguish between individual alpha emitters. By providing clear and traceable alpha/beta separation and energy discrimination based on alpha particle energy, the Alpha+ allows highly sensitive and fast radio-TLC measurements for 225Ac.
Nuclide identification in minutes
By generating alpha spectra for samples on planchet discs, the Alpha+ enables quick, easy nuclide identification for alpha-emitting isotopes. The disc itself is mounted on an adapter that sits in the recess of the Scan-RAM 2’s TLC plate.
This supports a range of analytical applications, including:
- Quantitation of alpha-emitting radionuclides in sample aliquots without secular equilibrium.
- Quantitation of nuclidic impurities such as 229Th, 228Th, and 210Po.
- Nuclide identification testing for 225Ac and 211At radiopharmaceuticals.

A new accessible solution for alpha spectrometry
Like all Scan-RAM 2 detectors, the Alpha+ is interchangeable and simply clicks in and out of the scanner’s detector carriage, adding true alpha spectrometric capability without the need for a dedicated alpha spectrometry system.
This provides an accessible solution for laboratories looking to introduce alpha spectrometry. Unlike traditional methods that require dedicated vacuum systems, the Alpha+ operates in air and requires only a Scan-RAM 2 scanner and a compatible planchet disc.
A compliant solution for alpha therapeutics
Like all LabLogic detectors, the Alpha+ is controlled by Laura Radiopharma radiochromatography software, providing a single, compliant point of control for GMP. It has a comprehensive nuclide library and quick start wizard, allowing radio-TLC measurements in just two clicks.
