Prioritising safety in radiopharmaceutical dispensing

TEMA Singerie’s Karl100 Multi-Dose Administration System is used for the dispensing and injection of a wide range of radiotracers, such as F-18 and Ga-68. Distributed by LabLogic, the system provides a safe and user-friendly experience for both operators and patients.

The Karl100 demonstrably reduces radiation exposure to both users and patients. Our newest video with George Hunter, LabLogic’s Nuclear Medicine and PET Product Specialist, showcases the Karl100’s key features and applications.

Reducing radiation exposure to operators

Radiation exposure is an occupational hazard for nuclear medicine staff dispensing radiopharmaceuticals. The Karl100 has been designed to limit exposure by automatically uncapping the lead pot and perforating the multi-dose vial septum. The drawing of the dose from the bulk vial is transferred to a 60mm lead compartment, which fully shields the operator when dispensing. A built-in Geiger-Müller tube allows for continuous real-time dosimetry monitoring.

Eliminating patient overdosing and contamination

The Karl100 keeps radiopharmaceuticals sterile by filtering the incoming doses from the bulk vial through a 0.22μm filter. The patient is never connected to the multi-dose mother vial, meaning that there is no risk of overdose or patient-to-patient contamination. Additionally, a dedicated laminar flow Class A vented area with a filtered and controlled atmosphere allows for sterile syringe connection and filling.

Direct injection or remote injection

The Karl100 is a flexible system offering two injection options. The first is direct injection, which requires the device to be manually moved into the uptake room and connected to the patient. The second is remote injection, which is made possible by using the Rad-Inject.

Rad-Inject automated injector

Weighing just 1kg, the Rad-Inject is the smallest automated injector available for radiopharmaceuticals. The operator may double-check the dispensed dose using an external dose calibrator once the radiotracer has been loaded into the Rad-Inject. It can then be carried to the stand alongside the patient, removing the need to drive the main unit into the uptake room and alleviating patient anxiety.

During the injection phase, the operator can simply press the start button and distance themselves from the patient, minimising radiation exposure. It is possible to change the injection duration, as well as the rinsing steps, which ensures that minimal residual activity is left in the infusion line.
