Measuring bacterial growth

Despite being the only truly portable plate reader in the world, the small size of the Absorbance 96 doesn’t compromise on performance. In a comparative study by the Munich University of Applied Sciences, it was able to proficiently measure bacterial growth, obtaining optical density (OD) readings comparable with a much larger plate reader. It uses plug-and-play technology, meaning it can be easily used between different laboratories or in the field, and its portability enables on-site measurements, eliminating the need for sample transportation.

In the study, it was compared to two other commercially available instruments, the BioMate 3 spectrophotometer and the SpectraMax iD3 plate reader. Results found that the BioMate 3 exhibited relatively higher OD605 values in comparison to the other two instruments, likely due to variations in path length, whereas no significant difference was observed in results obtained by the Absorbance 96 and SpectraMax iD3, proving its reliability despite its much smaller size.

Determination of OD605 measurements for different concentrations of Sporosarcina pasteurii performed on three different absorbance measurement devices. The graph shows the comparative analysis between the BioMate 3, SpectraMax iD3, and Absorbance 96.
