The Hidex Sense is a compact, state-of-the-art, multi-mode microplate reader which provides a powerful and flexible platform for performing any kind of assay without limitations.
The Beta Plus version of the Sense uniquely combines liquid scintillation counting (LSC) with all common non-radiometric measurements, such as fluorescence and absorbance, into one very compact multi-mode microplate reader.
The dedicated PMT detector for LSC is also utilised to obtain ultra-high sensitivity luminescence for demanding applications and for reducing reagent use in assays such as dual luciferase. This option provides users with up to 10 times more sensitivity than other common luminescence microplate readers and scintillation counters.
Multi-Mode Microplate Reader Technology
The Hidex Sense microplate scintillation counter uniquely combines:
Fluorescence
Absorbance
Luminescence
Fluorescence Polarisation
TR – Fluorescence
FRET
TR-FRET
Dual Excitation Fluorescence

Liquid Scintillation Counting (optional)
Alternatively the Hidex Sense Beta model offers liquid scintillation counting and the functionality of a high sensitivity luminescence microplate reader only.
The compact size makes the Sense multi-mode microplate reader ideal for even the smallest laboratory and allows it to be easily adapted for robotic integration or situated within environmental control cabinets.
Unique Filter Arrangement
The innovative optical filter system can hold up to 32 optical filters, eliminating the need to change filters frequently. Filters are automatically identified by the software and can be used for both excitation and emission without any limitation.
Superior Performance
Sensitivity and Speed
Utilising filter technology for fluorescence applications not only gives optimal sensitivity but also faster reading speeds than other microplate readers.
Spectrograph as Standard
Protein quantification, enzyme activity and other photometric assays benefit from recording the full spectrum. Ultrafast spectrum readout is obtained in the Sense by using a high sensitivity spectrograph. The sample spectrum is scanned in less than a second, with no compromise to sensitivity.

Temperature control is included as standard from ambient +2°C to 65°C.
Incubation and Shaking
The Hidex Sense multi-mode microplate reader allows linear, orbital and double orbital shaking with various intensities and user defined incubation periods.
Kinetics
The Hidex Sense multi-mode microplate reader is able to perform kinetic assays by plate or by well at user defined intervals. The kinetic profile is automatically plotted within the software.
It uniquely allows you to pause and resume kinetic runs, perfect for a multi-user environment.
Multiplexing
Multiple technologies can be performed sequentially allowing, for example, the ability to analyse multiple florescent dyes in one sample.
The software collate all results into one easy to handle excel file.
Optional
Automatic Dispensers
For the addition of reagents or kinetic measurements the Sense offers an optional one or two channel dispensing system. Injections can be performed either by well or by plate, for fast reactions or to maximise throughput.
Atmospheric Control Unit
A digitally controlled, high accuracy gas mixing system for cell viability, hypoxia and other cellular assays is available as an option. The CO2 and O2 concentrations are easily managed from the touchscreen.
Stacker
The Sense can be equipped with the Scorpion stacker for high throughput. There are options available such as light shields and a barcode reader. Watch the video below.

Louvain Institute of Biomolecular Science, France
Unveiling the regulatory network controlling natural transformation in lactococci
In a study by Frédéric Toussaint et al. at the Louvain Institute of Biomolecular Science in conjunction with IFF Health & Biosciences, the Hidex Sense multimode compact plate reader has been used to identify the physiological conditions that activate competence for DNA transformation in Lactococcus lactis, the most important lactococcal species.
The microplate reader was used to monitor the expression of the ComX gene through luminescence. Growth (OD600) and luciferase activity were monitored at 5-minute intervals on the reader for a maximum of 24 hours.
You can learn more about the study and how the Hidex Sense was used by clicking the button below.
Researchers from the Diabetes and Metabolism Group at Bristol Medical School chose the Hidex Sense multi-mode microplate reader to increase the throughput of luminescence assays as the group’s existing luminometer did not have stacking ability. The group were looking to match their current instruments impressive signal to background ratio for luminescence and therefore, the group chose the Hidex Sense. It ticked all boxes whilst offering additional capabilities such as TRF, absorbance and LSC which was useful for the group.
The group has been using the Hidex Sense microplate reader for assays using Nano-Glo® Luciferase. Nano-Glo® Luciferase assays allow researchers to detect the activities of firefly and luciferases in a single sample.
Congratulations to Jussi Hepojoki and his colleagues at the Department of Virology, the University of Helsinki for their excellent work on the development of a rapid PCR test for Covid-19 that uses a TR-FRET assay for SARS-CoV-2 performed on the Hidex Sense Multi-Mode Microplate Reader.
Jordan Pascoe is a first-year PhD student in the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Surrey. Jordan has been using the Hidex Sense multi-mode microplate reader to study antimicrobial resistance and how the metabolic state of bacteria may affect treatment efficacy, as part of wider research into tuberculosis.
